Susan Alane Coates

With heavy hearts, we share that our beloved sister, Susan Coates, passed unexpectedly on July 12, 2025. A lifelong native of Weaverville, NC, Susan was a mountain girl at heart who cherished her home and the breathtaking landscapes that shaped her spirit. Her love for the outdoors was evident in her passion for nurturing her gardens and cultivating vibrant flowers and treasured memories.

Susan was a devoted sister, daughter and loving companion to her pets, Dixie and Hendley. She embodied kindness and unwavering support for all who knew her. Susan’s caring nature shone through as she selflessly cared for her family. Susan "loved BIG" and was always ready to lend a hand, leaving a lasting impact on those around her.

As we remember Susan, we hold dear the times spent together, the laughter shared, and the warmth of her spirit. She will be profoundly missed but will live on in our hearts. Rest in peace, dear Sissy! We will always feel your BIG LOVE and we love you BIG forever!

Susan was the daughter of the late James Ray Coates and the late Margaret Anne Hendley Deweese. Those left to cherish her memory include her sisters, Trivia Hefner (Patrick) and Jane Coates (Lynn); nephews Laythe Riddle (Candace) and James Erwin; grandnephew Maddox Riddle, and many extended family members and friends.

A private graveside service will be held at the Coates Family Cemetery in Weaverville.
