Roland McCloud Reece, affectionately known as "Roho" or "The Tire Man," passed away on September 2, 2025, in Asheville, North Carolina, at the age of 89. Born on July 6, 1936, in Madison County, NC, Roland lived a life marked by dedication, hard work, and deep community ties.
Roland began his career at the first Krispy Kreme store in Asheville before transitioning into the tire business. He began in the tire business working for his cousin at Smith Tire where he learned the industry as a tire recapper. In 1967, he took a leap of faith to establish his own venture, Reece Tire Deals, which later evolved into Newbridge Tire and Alignment. His commitment to quality service helped build a trusted reputation in the community, and he proudly operated the tire shop until his retirement, when his son and grandsons continued the family legacy.
Beginning his education at Red Oak School in Madison County, Roland moved to Buncombe County in the seventh grade and graduated from Woodfin High School. His lifelong devotion to his work was matched only by his dedication to his faith, being a longtime member of Newbridge Baptist Church, and he cherished the connections he made through both his church and his business.
Roland is survived by his son, Alton L. Reece and wife, Rita; grandsons: Brent Reece, Travis Reece and wife, Diana, and Austin Reece and wife, Whitney; as well as his great-grandchildren: Brieanna, Kate-Marie, Gavin, Stella Mae, Gunnar, Tanner, Colter, and Gwendolyn.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Bonnie Mae Owenby Reece, who departed this world on December 27, 2021. Roland also mourned the loss of his parents, Jeter "JG" Gaither Reece and Leila Burnett Reece, and his sisters: Zora Hays and husband Bob, Jeanette Kennedy and husband Herman, and Viola Greene and husband Dellis.
A visitation will be held on September 5, 2025, at Anders-Rice Funeral Home in Asheville from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Rev. Larry Sprouse will officiate and burial will follow at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory with Rev. Mike Woodard officiating the graveside service.
Roland's legacy lives on through his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched in the Asheville community. His contributions to the tire business and his unwavering spirit will not be forgotten.
