Hartman Rankin Kuykendall, a resilient and dedicated individual, passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the Sapphire Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Brevard. Born on December 4, 1931, in Asheville, Hartman proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. After completing his military service, he embarked on a commendable career that culminated in a 21-year tenure with the Asheville City Police Department, where he served with distinction.

Hartman was part of a large and loving family, being one of fifteen siblings, an experience that shaped his character and instilled in him the values of loyalty and camaraderie. Hartman was also a devoted pet owner, especially fond of his beloved dog, Ella, who was a constant companion by his side.

Alongside his brother, Bobby Kuykendall; Hartman was supported and treasured by longtime friends Phillip and Joyce Evans, who stood by him throughout the years and shared in the joys and challenges of life.

Hartman was predeceased by his parents, Elijah Luther Kuykendall and Survilla Lunsford Kuykendall; his son, Hartman R. Kuykendall; and thirteen brothers and sisters.

His legacy of service, love, and friendship will remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him. Hartman Rankin Kuykendall will be remembered as a steadfast individual who embodied strength, honor, and devotion throughout his life.

No services are planned. He will be laid to rest at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
