George Frederick Becker

George Frederick Becker, 82, passed away peacefully, with the love of his life, Jean his wife, for 61 years by his side, on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at the John F. Keever Jr. Solace Center. A native of Gainesville FL, he was a resident of Buncombe County since 1954. George was a commercial artist for WLOS for 33 years and then worked with AB Emblem for 7 years before retiring. He was a member of Rotary, Blue Ridge Gator Club, and Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church for 60 years, where he was an Elder, Deacon, and Sunday School teacher. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed working in his yard with various fruit trees throughout the years. He was also a member of the YMCA for 25 years where he enjoyed swimming. George was the son of the late Dr. Raymond Brown Becker and Harriet Jemeima Horn Becker. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Thomas Becker; children: Bill Becker and wife Charlotte of Hickory, Bob Becker and wife Vicki of Ocean Isle, and Mary Gail Becker Broome and husband Robert of Harrisburg; granddaughters: Dr. Laura Broome, Julie Becker Barnes, Samantha Becker, Allison Broome, and Jessica Becker all of whom he was very proud of; sisters: Elizabeth Mitchell and husband Paul of Pekin, IL, and Ann Herrick and husband Bob of Cary; and by many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express a special Thank You to the staff of the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center for their exceptional care for George and also to their many friends and family for their support during this time. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM, Friday, May 9, 2014, at Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Thomas M. Cox officiating. Burial will be immediately following at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7:00 till 9:00 PM at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church, 2 Bear Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
