Asheville - Elsie Marie Cook Stewart, 85, of 96 Madeline Avenue, passed away Sunday, December 26, 2004 at St. Joseph Hospital after an extended illness. A native of Whitesville, WV, she graduated from the Southland Bible Institute in Pikeville, KY in 1948. She continued her studies at the Philadelphia School Of the Bible and the Biblical School of Theology in Hatfield, PA. After completion of her studies, she was employed as an office secretary for the European Evangelistic Crusade from 1949 through 1957, and then was employed with Gospel Projects of Philadelphia, PA, which later moved to Asheville, from 1958 to 1982. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where she taught the Ladies Bible Class from 1978 to 1996. Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of the late William Ellsworth and Bida Jarrell Cook, and was married in August, 1953 to David B. Stewart, who passed away on May 26, 1967. Surviving are her sister, Nell Toney of Racine, WV; her brothers: Rev. Arnold Cook and wife Ethel of Stoneville, NC, and Bill S. Cook and wife Jean of Hendersonville; her dear and special friend, Betty Weikle of Asheville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Wednesday at Temple Baptist Church, with the Revs. Randy Bray, Robert Doom and Arnold Cook officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah View Memorial Park in Candler. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
