C. Gilbert Md Tweed

Ormond Beach, FL - C. Gilbert Tweed, M.D. of Ormond Beach, died Sunday, August 3, 2014. Born in Asheville, Dr. Tweed came to the Ormond Beach area in 1970 from Gainesville, FL. Dr. Tweed received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his doctor of medicine degree from Duke University, and served an internship in general surgery and specialty training with a Fellowship in Neurology at the University of Florida. His association with the University of Florida, as well as the University of South Florida, continued until his retirement. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1963 to 1966 as Chief of Neurology, Neurodiagnostic Laboratory, Yokosuka, Japan, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In 1967, he returned to the University of Florida for a National Institute of Health Fellowship in Neurological Surgery, and to serve as an instructor of neurological surgery. In 1970, he joined in partnership with Dr. Thomas E. Scott of Daytona Beach until Dr. Scotts retirement in 1992. Dr. Tweed continued in a solo practice, holding senior staff privileges at Halifax Hospital Medical Center, until his own retirement in 2008. He wrote articles for several medical publications, and belonged to numerous professional associations, including the American Medical Association, Florida Medical Association, Volusia County Medical Society, Florida Neurosurgical Society, and too many more to list. Dr. Tweed was a devoted fan of Gator football, as well as University of North Carolina Basketball, and was a long time member of the Daytona Beach Quarterback Club. He also enjoyed boating and fishing, especially in the Bahamas. An animal lover, Dr. Tweed was devoted to his dogs, many of which were rescue animals. Survivors include five sons, Dr. Jonathan Tweed of Fall River, MA, Robert Tweed of DeLand, FL, Dr. Lindsey Tweed and wife, Claudia, of Portsmouth, ME, Eric and Kevin Tweed, both of Ormond Beach, and two grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Green Hills Cemetery, with the Rev. C. Daryl Overton officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129, or to Halifax Humane Society, 2354 West LPGA Boulevard, Daytona Beach, FL 32120.
