Woodfin - William Taft Evans, Sr., 96, of 33 Reese St. died Thursday, December 2, 2004 at the V. A. Medical Center, Asheville following a period of declining health. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during WW II and a former member of the American Legion. He retired in 1973 from Drexel Heritage Furniture after 20 years of service and he was formerly employed by Gordon Furniture Co. for 15 years. Mr. Evans was the son of the late John N. and Dinah Davis Evans. He was also preceded in death by a son, Gerald Evans, a daughter, Shelby Jean Evans, and a brother, Ralph Evans. Surviving are his wife, Alda Vearl Hollifield Evans; son, William T. Evans, Jr. and wife Kathy of Woodfin; granddaughters, Deborah Ann Barker and Cynthia Lynn Green both of Candler and Sherri Gwen Blankenship of Waxaw; step grandson, Tranis Clark of Clyde; 10 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Duvall officiating. Entombment will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Western Carolina Rescue Ministries, 225 Patton Ave., Asheville, NC 28802.
