Asheville Virginia Sparks Turner, 93, of 100 Riceville Road, went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 19, 2013 at The Laurels of Summit Ridge. A native of Flag Pond, TN, she had resided in Buncombe County most of her life. She retired as Director of the Buncombe County Juvenile Detention Center and formerly served as Credit Manager at Friedmans and Karr Jewelry. She was a graduate of Dorland Bell School in Hot Springs, NC, attended Asheville Normal School and was a member of Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church. She will always be remembered for her beautiful flowers and was recognized by Quality Forward for the beautification at the Manor Inn Grounds and was awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine by North Carolina Governor James G. Martin. Mrs. Turner was the daughter of the late James Henry Sparks and Bonnie Sands Sparks and was the wife of Alvin Weaver Turner who died in 2003. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Dennis Sparks, Clyde Sparks, Doyle Sparks and Charles Sparks and sisters, Agnes Crump and Gladys Bradley. Surviving are her son, James W. Turner and wife Pamela of Asheville; grandchildren, Robin Turner Oswald and husband John and Brian Mills Turner and wife Katina all of Asheville; great grandchildren, Harrison, Carson, Riley and Eleanor; sister-in-law, Juanita Letterman of Asheville; several nieces and nephews, including her devoted niece, Sandra Rice who helped make her last years more comfortable. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Friday, August 23, 2013 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
