Raymond Sluder

July 25, 1921 — January 5, 2013

Weaverville - Raymond George Sluder, 91, of Weaverville, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the Memorial campus of Mission Hospitals. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Mr. Sluder retired in 1977 from Drexel Furniture Company, and was formerly employed with Morgan Brothers. Following retirement, he worked on small engines as a hobby. He was a member of United Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Senior Deacon. Mr. Sluder was veteran of the US Army, Fourth Division, during World War II, serving in five major battles, and receiving the Purple Heart for his valor. He was honored on July 4, 2010 by Heath Shuler, Nathan Ramsey and Carl Mumpower for his outstanding military service. Mr. Sluder was the son of the late Clayton and Frances Rhymer Sluder. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Alice Naomi McFalls Sluder, who passed away March 1, 2003; sister, Helen Clark; and brother, Conley Sluder. Surviving are his daughters: Donna Sluder Smith and Joyce Sluder, both of Weaverville; sister, Louise Calhoun of Alabama; brothers: Ellis Sluder and wife Shirley of Alabama, Ray Sluder of Leicester, and Bill Sluder and wife Josephine of Alexander; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Tuesday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gary Coates and Rev. Tim Burnette officiating. Entombment will follow in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, with military graveside rites provided by the NC National Guard. The family will receive friends from 1:00 2:15 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
