Asheville Peggy Stewart Smith Long, 85, of 16 Lancelot Lane went to be with her Lord, Monday, January 30, 2012 at the St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospitals. A native of Marshall, she had resided in Asheville most of her life. She attended school in Marshall and A-B Tech, had worked at Biltmore Manufacturing, Kellwood as a supervisor, Girmes and retired in 2009 from Asheville Housing Authority as an office manager. She also was a Lifetime Charter member of Asheville Drove #140 Benevolent Patriotic Order of Does and held the highest office as the Supreme President of the National Organization in 1982-83. Mrs. Long was a daughter of the late George G. Stewart and Manila Nell Haynie Stewart and wife of Herman J. Smith, Sr. who died in 1969 and Thomas W. Long who died in 1998. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Poconna Cauble Matthews. Surviving are her children, Herman J. Smith, Jr. and wife Nancy, George J. Smith, Wilfred R. Smith, Sr. and wife Betty, Manila J. Runyon and Poconna S. Thiel and husband Paul; 26 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; sister, Georgia Karr and husband Wendy; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 10 A.M. Thursday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Reverend Lisa Hartzog Hannah officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
