Asheville - Max Flack, 84, of 19 Sunset Drive, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2006 at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center following a period of declining health. A native of McDowell County, he had resided in Buncombe County since 1957. He served for 13 years in the US Navy as a Naval Aviator during the World War II and the Korean Conflict era. After his service in the military, he worked as a self-employed contractor with Toms Snackfoods. Mr. Flack was a member of Pole Creek Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Miles P. and Hettie Upton Flack. Mr. Flack was also preceded in death by two sisters: Billie Burgess and Kent Greenwood. Surviving are his wife of 63+ years, Bonnie Peggy Norton Flack; two sons: Phil Flack and wife Nancy of Asheville and Joe Flack and wife Tami of Lake Jackson, TX; three grandchildren: Alex, Jessica, and Tyler Flack; sister, Genoese Pyatt of Fuquay Varina, NC; and special friends, Lela and Ernest Davis of Asheville. A memorial service will be held at 6 PM Saturday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Thurman officiating. The family will receive friends following the services at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Mr. Flacks son, Phil Flack, 18 Sunset Drive, Asheville, NC. A graveside service will be held at 10 AM Monday in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital For Crippled Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
