Gloria "Cricket" Tweed

November 4, 1948 — February 16, 2003

Arden - Gloria Gail "Cricket" Tate Tweed, 54, of 10 Forest Ridge Drive went to be with her savior Jesus Sunday, February 16, 2003 at the Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center following a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Polk County, N.C. She had resided in Buncombe County for 53 years. Mrs. Tweed served as a School Counselor with both Weaverville Primary and Elementary Schools for 13 years and formerly employed for 19 years with the Buncombe County Department of Social Services. She received her B.S. Degree in Social Services and while raising her children went back to Western Carolina University and received her Masters Degree in 1989. She was a member of Bent Creek Baptist Church where she was a member of the Porter Jennings Sunday School class, Senior Adult Choir, was a former AWANA/Extreme Life Teacher and a member of the Royal Arcanium Fraternal Organization. Mrs. Tweed was a former member of Biltmore Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was a daughter of Dufay and Wilma Johnson Tate of Skyland and was preceded in death by her sister, Brenda Tate Bridges and husband, Robert Bridges. She was a devoted wife and mother and surviving in addition to her parents are her husband of 31 years, Carroll Luther Tweed of the home, daughter, Michelle Whisenant and husband, Randall of Winston-Salem; son, Bryan Tweed of the home; her pet dog of 13 years, Boomer; brothers, Roger Tate and wife, Sue of Jasper, Georgia, Dufay "Pete" Tate and wife, Donna of Asheville and Mike Tate and wife, Wanda of Enka and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bent Creek Baptist Church with the Rev's Tommy Bridges, Harold Savell and Freddy Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends following services at the church and at other times the family will be at the residence. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bent Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Robert Blackwell, Sam Johnson, Robert Nesbitt, Barry Smith, Sean Tate and Steve Turner. The family would like to say a special thanks to the nurses on the Oncology, 10th floor at St. Joseph's Hospital and especially Dr. Freeman, to the Western North Carolina Cancer Center and especially Ann, the Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center for their kindness and compassion and to her prayer group at Weaverville Primary and Elementary Schools.
