Gladys Brown Young

November 12, 1919 — May 28, 2007

Asheville - Gladys Virginia Brown Young, 87, of 77 Elk Mountain Road departed this life from her residence on May 28, 2007 and went home to be with the Lord. A native of Buncombe County, she moved to Lockhart, SC in 1922 where she resided for several years before returning to Asheville in her later teens in 1937. She was a 1939 graduate of Woodfin High School. Mrs. Young was a sales associate for many years for J. B. Ivey Co. which later became known as Dillards Department Store. She received numerous awards for her outstanding salesmanship as one of the top 100 producers in the Carolinas. She retired from Dillards in 1986. She attended Crossroads Assembly and was a member of the Woodfin Golden Age Club. She was a daughter of the late Arles Otto and Geneva Cora White Brown and the wife of the late Thomas Lowell Butch Young who went to be with the Lord on November 25, 1989. She was also preceded in death by 2 brothers, Troy and A. O. Brown and a sister, Beatrice Bea Gibson Rhodes. Surviving are her daughters who love her dearly, Regina Gina Greene and husband Tom of Candler and Gail Atkinson and husband Mark of Fairview and sister, Catherine Pendergrast of Asheville. She was the proud grandmother of four grandchildren, Shannon Greene of Fairview, Ryan Greene and wife Emily of Candler, Seth Atkinson and wife Janette of Simpsonville, S.C. and Jonathan Atkinson of Fairview and two great grandsons, Luke Atkinson and Cody Greene and numerous nieces and nephews. She devoted her life to being a loving and Godly mother and grandmother. She was known as a mentor to many others and was skilled at creating a warm and loving home environment where all felt welcome. She was loved by all and will be dearly missed. She is a rose that will never fade away. Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Friday June 1, 2007 at Crossroads Assembly with Pastor J. Michael Brown and Pastor Wade Zachary officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Thursday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
