Arden - Fred E. Calloway, 73, of Arden, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2006 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals following a period of declining health. A native of Buncombe County, Fred was a graduate of Black Mountain High School, and received his Bachelors Degree from Western Carolina University, and his Masters in Education from Ball State University. He then entered the US Marine Corps, serving in the Korean War. After his service, Fred worked as a teacher for the US Military School in Germany for the next 30 years, before returning to Buncombe County. Fred was the son of the late Lee Roland and Ethel Austin Calloway. He is also preceded in death by his wife of over 47 years, Grace M. Calloway, who passed away January 31, 2005. Surviving are his son, David M. Calloway, of Salt Lake City, UT; mother-in-law, Catherine Finch Norton of Old Fort; brother-in-law, Robert Mason of Fletcher; close friends, Petra Lopes and Johnny Lopes, both of Black Mountain; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, October 23, 2006 in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, with the Rev. Jerry Wilson officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Animal Compassion Network, PO Box 1704, Skyland, NC 28776, or to the charity of ones choice.
