Asheville Edwin Cecil Earwood, 89, of Bradley Street, died April 11, 2016 at the Brian Center Nursing Home, Weaverville. He retired from Norfork-Southern Railway as an Engineer, serving 40 years. He was a Navy veteran of WWII, serving on a Flag Ship that was engaged in the Battles of Leyte, Luzan and Bay of Japan and was given a Purple Heart because of the nature of the battles. He was a long time member of Beaverdam Baptist Church of Asheville. His favorite pastime was picking his guitar and singing to kids and reciting poetry. He will be missed. As a family, we spent many years singing together, and hope to continue in Heaven. He was the son of the late Harlin William Earwood and Doskey Shuler Earwood. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, James Thomas, Jack Harold and Emmett Eugene and long time special friend, Virginia Bryson. Surviving are his sister, Mary Earwood Rice of Woodfin; sisters-in-law, Janet Roberts Earwood of Snellville, GA and Edith Earwood Bishop of Asheville and many nieces and nephews. He was Papaw to all the family of Dennis Bryson of Asheville. He loved them and they loved him. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday, April 16, 2016 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Rhinehart officiating, and Becky Hensley will be bringing her message in music. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 PM Saturday at the funeral home.
