Doris Mae Scroggs

Leicester On September 11, 2009, a day forever known for tragedy, a triumph over death occurred as our loving mother was claimed by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in her sleep at her home in Leicester. Doris was originally from Cleveland, OH, graduating from Shaw High School in 1949. She was a resident of Buncombe County since 1951, being a longtime member of Newfound Baptist Church in Leicester and Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church in Asheville. She is very fondly remembered as a longtime Sunday School teacher and Girl Scout Leader in her community. She is survived by her devoted and dedicated daughter, Patricia Janine Scroggs Strickland and loving son-in-law, Joseph Branston Strickland, also of the home in Leicester. She is also survived by brothers: William G. Smith and Jim Ruck and wife Carol of Ohio; daughter, Bonita Scroggs Newlon of Wilmington, NC; son, John Scroggs, Jr. and wife Jan of East Asheville; and son, Daniel Scroggs and wife Joyce of Fletcher. She is further survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Tuesday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home and Cremation Center, with the Rev. Daniel Dockery officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6-9 PM Monday at the funeral home.
