Nebo - Donald Edwin Surrett, 71 of Nebo, died January 24th in Asheville. Mr. Surrett was born December 18, 1940 in Swannanoa. He was a son of Woodrow and Geneva (Capps) Surrett. He graduated from Charles D. Owen High School in 1959, served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962 in the 167th Signal Company, attended college at N.C. State and Clemson in Electronics and Mechanical Engineering. He was very proud of the work he did for the Space program. After several jobs in the manufacturing industry, he opened a courier service business from 1984 through 2005. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara (Polly) Jenkins; son, Donald (Shawn) and his wife Kim of Asheville; daughters, Denita and husband Pete Winstead of Bates City, MO and Sandi and husband Darrell Sherlin of Asheville; brother, Charles Surrett of Ninety-Six, SC; sisters, Linda Norris and Movita Myers both of Sweetwater, TN; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by one grandson, Christopher Mann. Funeral services will be held 6:00 P.M. Thursday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Pastor Pete Winstead and Pastor Nathaniel Drake officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the services at the funeral home. The burial will be held 10:00 A.M. Friday in Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
