Hot Springs Annie Epperson Sloan, 79, passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals following a brief illness. Born August 4, 1929 in Ararat, VA, Annie loved the mountains, beaches, rocks and wild flowers of North Carolina. A natural athlete and an All-State basketball player in Virginia, Annie also succeeded in the insurance industry with Integon Insurance Corp. of Winston-Salem. She married Kermit C. Sloan on July 14, 1947 and they settled in the Winston-Salem area to raise their four children. Following her retirement from Integon, Annie moved to Hot Springs to be closer to her grandchildren. She will be remembered for her engaging personality, quirky sense of humor and perceptive intelligence. Annie was the daughter of the late Emmett and Hattie Mae Gunter Epperson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Kermit, and two brothers: Ronald and William Epperson. Surviving are children: Greg Sloan and wife Dulcie Brown of Santa Rosa, CA, Mary Clark and husband Bobby of Hot Springs, Cheryl Postlewaite and husband Tom Tallent of Asheville, and Tim Sloan and wife Sandy of Mocksville, NC; three grandchildren: Travis Clark, Amanda Cadwell, and Anna Marie Sloan; three great-grandchildren: Darren Cadwell, Kaine Cadwell, and Cameron Clark; sister, Ruth Sloan of Ararat, VA; brother, Ray Epperson of Tampa, FL; sister-in-law, Margaret Epperson of Ararat, VA; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM Monday at Vogler and Sons Funeral Home in Winston-Salem, with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will also receive friends from 6-8 PM Saturday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Chief Norman Running of the Lakota Sioux, P.O. Box 689, Rosebud, SD 57570.
